Hunter Region Botanical Gardens
The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens, established at Heatherbrae in 1985, spans 125 hectares and stands as the sole botanic garden in the region.
With 30 hectares dedicated to developed gardens and the remainder set aside for conservation, the site is a haven for an array of birds and wildlife. The Gardens emphasize native plants from the Hunter Region but also feature over 25 specialty gardens, including an impressive succulent garden recognized as one of the largest collections in the southern hemisphere. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Gardens play a crucial role in scientific research and conservation, housing a comprehensive herbarium and extensive library, while actively participating in the NPWS and Save Our Species programs to protect rare and endangered plant species.
Monthly events, guided walks, and educational programs, including those on indigenous foods, ensure there’s always something new to experience. Remarkably, all these efforts are supported by a dedicated team of 200 volunteers, as the Gardens operates without a single paid gardener. From weddings and film shoots to spring fairs and educational walks, the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens offers versatile spaces for a wide range of events.
